The Super Mario Bros. It was one of six themes composed for the game by Nintendo sound designer Koji Kondo , who found it to be the most difficult track to compose for it. The theme is set in the key of C major and features a swung rhythm with prominent use of syncopation. In later installments with more powerful sound hardware, it is often scored as a calypso song led by steel drums. After Super Mario Bros. Of the six tracks of the Super Mario Bros.
We all know these games have bland soundtracks, so I want to look at how public perception of the series got this way, and how the soundtracks got to this point of universally being known as failing to live up to the music Mario is known for. This extended to the music as well, which resulted in a lot of heavily melodic tracks. Mario had been going much more atmospheric on the 3D console games, so the idea here was clearly to take the more expansive modern sound tech and apply that to a classic, melodic style. Songs like the Athletic Theme kept the classic idea of an energetic song, but applied vocals and instrumentation to it, and the Underwater Theme is very heavy on murky, soft instrumentation while keeping that strong melody to it. If you want a great summation of what this series started out with, I would turn to the credits theme. It never tried to be anything more than a small little musical throwback to memories of old, and if the series had stayed here, I doubt many people would have had many complaints about this small DS soundtrack. The series… kind of did stay here, though, in spirit. The next three games are often maligned for being so similar, and I could not agree more in terms of how they sound.
