When I was 15 years old, I realized that I had torn my hymen… two years earlier, at During those two years, I had been getting a grip on periods I decided that pads felt gross. I had always been into sports, climbing trees as soon as I realized I could, and roller-skating at the age of two. When I was 15 and debating hardships overcome by young women, one of the discussions was around why girls of some religions were not allowed to partake in sports. In fact, they were discouraged and actually prevented from exercising in general. WHY would you prevent girls from doing sports?! Men and women need to exercise! This was news to me. What was this new hymen theory?

Over centuries, virginity has been given social, religious and moral importance. It is widely believed as a state of a female who has never engaged in sexual intercourse, and her hymen is intact. Hymenoplasty for torn hymen is carried out not only for the sake of cultural and religious traditions but also for the social status and interpersonal relationships. Two flaps were based proximally, and their two opposing flaps were based distally. The donor area was closed primarily. When some remains of a torn hymen were found, one to three vaginal mucosal flaps were added to its remains as per the need for reconstruction. We operated upon 11 patients. In nine cases, the hymen was reconstructed with four flaps.
Most females are born with a hymen. A hymen is a thin membrane that stretches across the vagina. It generally has a ring-like appearance with a small opening. Most girls have a small crescent- or donut-shaped opening in their hymen. This opening allows for access to the vagina. This is a hymen in which no opening to the vagina is present. Symptoms often appear when a girl reaches puberty, and may include abdominal pain and swelling that can last days.
